Class of 1961 graduate Jerry Stephenson lived the dream of many young American boys when he signed with the Boston Red Sox on June 17, 1961, only days after graduating from Anaheim High. As a senior at Anaheim, Jerry was named the Sunset League’s Most Valuable varsity baseball player.
Jerry was a major league baseball pitcher for nine years, playing for Boston, the Seattle Pilots (later becoming the Milwaukee Brewers) and Los Angeles Dodgers.
He pitched for the Red Sox in the 1967 World Series. Following in the footsteps of his father, Joe Stephenson, Jerry became a major league scout and worked for the Red Sox organization from 1996 to 2009. He also served as a scout for the Dodgers from 1974-1995.
Over his career, Jerry collected eight championship rings, including one as a pitcher on the 1967 American League champion Red Sox.
Stephenson married Class of ’65 graduate Yvonne Osbourn in 1967. Their 43-years union produce two children, Shannon Smaldino and Brian, a scout in the Dodgers system. He is also survived by his mother, Anaheim resident Dorothea Stephenson; brothers Tom and Joe Jr.; and sisters Joanne (Reck), Class of ’68, and Marylou (Prohaska).
