    CONGRATULATIONS REUBEN!!! GIANTS 17 - PATRIOTS 14!!!

Super Bowl XLII should be a memorable showdown between the New England Patriots and the New York Giants. Regardless of which team Colonists football fans root for, keep in mind that one of Anaheim High's best-ever players will be taking the field on Super Bowl Sunday.

Reuben Droughns (Class of 1996) is a New York Giants running back and is completing his seventh full season in the National Football League. Currently, he plays both running back and fullback for the Giants, while also seeing plenty of action on special teams.

For the season, Reuben has carried the ball 85 times for 275 yards and scored six touchdowns, mostly seeing action in short-yardage situations. Among his highlights this season were two rushing touchdowns in a 24-17 victory in Week 3 over the Washington Redskins on Sept. He had a season-high 90 yards in a 31-10 Week 6 win over Atlanta on Oct. 15, and capped off a dramatic comeback with a game-winning touchdown with 1:33 left in a 21-16 win over the defending NFC Champion Chicago Bears in Week 13.

Since entering the NFL as a third round draft pick out of the University of Oregon in 2000, Droughns has earned a reputation as a hard-hitting, selfless player who is willing to do whatever it take to help his team succeed. Experienced as both a fullback and a tailback, in 2004 and 2005, he had back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons with the Denver Broncos and then with the Cleveland Browns.

In college, he was an All-Pac-10 running back for the Ducks, while also being a two-time JC All-American at Merced College.

At Anaheim High School, Droughns provided Colonist football fans with many memorable moments. The Colonists' all-time leading rusher, he ran for 2,083 yards his sophomore season, and a team-record 373 yards in a 34-32 CIF playoff win over Arroyo in 1993. He ended his career as Orange County's second all-time leading rusher and was a three-time All-Orange League first team selection and twice was named All-CIF.

*Watch for Reuben especially on Special Teams*

The Colonists ran their record to 3-0 with a 24-17 victory over Rancho Alamitos at Bolsa Grande Stadium. Playing only his ninth game in a Colonist uniform, Matt Contreras carried the ball, behind his offensive line, 33 times for 219 yards and a touchdown. Contreras now has 1,470 rushing yards since joining the team in the middle of last season. That total places him at No. 10 on Anaheim's all-time rushing list. He also set a new team mark by rushing for over 200 yards for the third straight game and now has four 200-yard efforts in his career, second only to the team-record 8 by Reuben Droughns (now a running back for the New York Giants).

Quarterback Vince Gomez threw two touchdown passes for his best game of the season, and the defense did its part in stifling the Vaqueros, the defending Garden Grove League champions. Anaheim improves to 5-0 lifetime against Rancho Alamitos, which also includes a 35-0 victory in the first round of that year's CIF playoffs.

Anaheim will be the away team next Friday at Glover Stadium when they take on Loara. Gametime is at 7 p.m.

Anaheim's first home game with the cross-town Katella had the Knights causing trouble and staying with the Colonists throughout the game, closing to within three points early in the fourth quarter, before Anaheim pulled away with a 45-28 victory.

Matt Contreras turned in a record breaking performance, setting new single-game marks for rushing touchdowns with SIX (beating the previous record of FOUR, held by 10 different Anaheim players, with the last time being Reuben Droughns in 1994 vs. Magnolia) Matt's six touchdowns also surpassed the single-game touchdown record, held by Joaquin Garcia in 1987 (vs. Magnolia). Contreras also matched the team record for carries in a game with 41, equalling Angel Rodriguez's total from 2002 (vs. Magnolia)

The senior running back's 280 yard performance was the second-highest single-game rushing total in team history, behind only Reuben Droughns' 373 yard-effort against Arroyo in first round of the 1993 CIF playoffs. Matt currently shares the county lead in scoring with 54 points (9 TDs) and 510 yards on 67 carries over the first two games of the 2007 season.

Gilbert Ceballos led Anaheim's defense with seven tackles and D'Vaughn Avery came up with a critical interception that helped set up Contreras' final touchdown, a 32-yard score in the fourth quarter to put the game out ofreach. Ramon Mejia was 6-for-6 on extra points and added a 31-yard fieldgoal.
